Austrian troops had a great numerical superiority (60000 Austtrians against 40000 Prussians). But their defencive concern played a deadly trick on them. Instead of taking advantage of their superiority and winter conditions they packed up and moved to the winter quarters. And as the enemy approached they found it sufficient enough to block the opponent's way and take a defencive position. They didn't seem to realize that it was the position they had been attacked at. The troops of Friedrich managed to take up Austrian's flank totally unnoticed. Then the Prussians attacked and broke the enemy's left wing before the right one approached the battlefield.
